Marriage of Iris Erica Donaldson, 1907

MARRIAGE OF MISS IRIS DONALDSON

The marriage of Miss Iris Erica Donaldson to Mr. Laurence Bernard Page, of Downe Lodge, Richmond Hill, Surrey, took place on Tuesday afternoon at S. Mark’s Church, Belgrave-gate. The officiating clergy were the Vicar of S. Mark’s, Rev. F. Lewis Donaldson, father of the bride, and Rev. A. A. D. Mackenzie, assistant curate. The chancel of the church was simply but beautifully decorated with flowers, and the marriage service was reverently followed. The choral portions of the service were rendered by the west gallery choir, and the singing was led by the man cantors in the chancel. There was a very large congregation, mainly consisting of the parishioners, who crowded every part of the spacious church. No doubt the fact that Miss Donaldson is the first vicar’s daughter to be married at the church since its erection deepened the interest displayed. It was noticeable that the keenest interest was taken in the proceedings by the parishioners, many obtaining leave of absence from their work in order to be present, and though Miss Donaldson was the recipient of many beautiful gifts, the one which probably delighted her most was that presented by the churchwardens, sidesmen, and choir, representing many of the congregation. The address was as follows. ‘As wardens of the church of S. Mark, of which your father is the revered vicar, we ask your acceptance of the accompanying tea service as a present from the lay officers of the church, on the occasion of your marriage. We trust that the continual use of this gift will cause your memory to revert to this parish and to its church, where so many of the worshippers within its walls join with us in heartfelt wishes for your future happiness. Signed, on their behalf, A. T. Snelgrove, Herbert Bowerman, churchwardens.”

At the close of the service the wedding march was effectively rendered by the organist, Mr. Walton Knight, and as the bridal party drove away the bells rang out a merry peal. Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Page left S. Mark’s Vicarage later in the day for the Yorkshire coast
