Shoe trade criticism of Rev Donaldson

LEICESTER WOMEN WORKERS.

Shoe Trade Criticism of the Rev. F. L. Donaldson.

Anent the recent address on “Women and Justice” by the Rev. F. L. Donaldson, the Vicar of St. Mark’s, Leicester, the “Shoe and Leather Record” observes:

“It passes our comprehension how any person resident in Leicester should have any misconception as to the status of girls and women employed in the local shoe industry. They are for the most part as healthy, well dressed, and well conducted a class as can be found in any town in the kingdom. Possibly they are at times lacking in the reserve which philanthropists of Mr. Donaldson’s type regard as desirable, but their capacity for enjoyment and their means for gratifying it are well in evidence in their leisure hours, as Mr. Donaldson should have plenty of opportunities for observing. Like many others of his kind who allow themselves to fulminate at large against existing social conditions, he is apt to make statements which cannot be substantiated. In future he would do well to confine his utterances to generalities and to avoid such specific references as those which have brought him into temporary prominence. In the meantime, as a clergyman and a gentleman, he can hardly do less than apologise and frankly withdraw the charges he levelled against employers in the Leicester shoe trade.”
