Funeral of Canon Lewis Donaldson

Funeral of Canon L. Donaldson

EX-CITY VICAR BURIED IN ABBEY

FOR THE FIRST time since the Coronation ceremony, part of Westminster Abbey was opened to the public yesterday afternoon for the funeral of Canon Lewis Donaldson, former Vicar of St. Mark’s, Leicester, and Sub-Dean at the Abbey until his retirement two years ago.

Canon Donaldson died last Wednesday, aged 93.

Among the congregation of more than 100 in the Nave where the service, conducted by the Dean of Westminster (Dr. Alan C. Don) was held, were the present Vicar of St. Mark’s (the Rev. R. J. Fielder) and his Churchwardens.

A TRIBUTE

Canon Dudley Simon, once a curate under Canon Donaldson at Leicester, was also present.

Referring to Canon Donaldson’s service in Leicester, Dr. Adam Fox, Archdeacon at Westminster, said that he had achieved a remarkable success.

“At St. Mark’s, he showed that a strong, good churchmanship could be commended to a large parish.

“He came to the Abbey at a time of life when many would think that their work was nearly over.

CONTRIBUTED MOST

“During a quarter-of-a-century he was one of those who contributed most to this place and he continued to do so to a great age.”

Canon Donaldson was interred in the Abbey’s Islet Chapel.

Family mourners who attended the service were Miss Donaldson (daughter); the Rev. Euan Donaldson (son); the Rev. and Mrs. George Stevenson and Major and Mrs. Ralph Thompson (sons-in-law and daughters); Dr. and Mrs. Cuthwin Donaldson (son and daughter-in-law); Mr. and Mrs. Clarence-Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Wilkinson, Mr. Hewlett Thompson and Miss Janet Donaldson (grandchildren).
