In the year 1163, during the pontificate of Pope Alexander III [Roland Bandinelli] and the reign of King Louis VII, Maurice de Sully, Bishop of Paris (1160-1196), undertook the construction of this cathedral to the honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary named Our Lady of Paris
